CATULLUS 70

My love says that she would rather be
in my bed than in Jupiter’s, but we
know that hot passion makes all women say
words carved in water and then washed away.

  1. swisstone says:

The not-very-good poet in me hears this in tetrameters:

My love says she would rather be
In my bed than in Jove’s, but we
Know passion makes all women say
Words carved on wind, then blown away

(I couldn’t make the last line work until I went back to the Latin and realized that Catullus has both elements.)
