And now I am done with eye surgery

Memento Mori

Eye drops go in above the lower lid.
They sting and blur your sight. Something tastes sour
behind your mouth. It lasts for half an hour
unless you rinse and gargle, which I did.

What seems soft, lets things in, that then drip through
the broad and narrow pathways in your head.
You don’t become a skull just when you’re dead.
It’s always there. The bone is always true

around the thinking brain, the kissing lips.
When life and beauty go, the skull remains
after the eyes, the lips, the nose, the brains
have gone to mulch, become just stuff that drips

down those same pathways that the eye drops use
reminding us of all that we will lose.
