Tonight’s villanelle

Wisdom

Sometimes it’s simpler just to love their mind
desire gets you in trouble like as not
stroking a cheek, a breast, a firm behind

Physical passion’s left me aching, blind
with sorrow -and that’s all that I have got
Sometimes it’s simpler just to love their mind.

I think of devil’s contracts I’d have signed
straight off without a tremor or a blot
to stroke a cheek, a breast, a firm behind.

And in the end, is anything I’d find
worth so much pain. I’d really answer Not.
Sometimes it’s simpler just to love their mind.

Then someone new walks in. I’m quite resigned
to lose composure, say ‘you’re really hot’
or stroke their cheek, their breast, their firm behind.

These things end badly, on the whole, I find.
How much more trouble than it’s worth – a lot –
to stroke a cheek, a breast, a firm behind
Sometimes it’s simpler just to love their mind.
